Finding Stillness for the Mind and Body Together

Try this restorative legs up the wall pose, or Vaparita Karani. This is a yogic pose where you lay with your back on the ground and raise your legs vertically, supported, resting against the wall. This pose reduces anxiety, helps with headaches and insomnia, improves lymphatic drainage, and even claims to slow aging. I love to do this when traveling, after walking a lot, or before bed. I will set a timer or choose a five-ten minute meditation (maybe use my “Body and Energy Reset” meditation) while I sit in this position and relax into supported stillness.

Wonder for the body

Our vagus nerve is responsible for our survival, it responds to external and internal stimulus and creates our well known “fight or flight” response. Strengthening your vagal tone improves your response to stressors. When I’m feeling exceptionally overwhelmed and stressed, I use this vagus nerve oil from Osea Malibu, and practice their steps to ground down, connect to my vagus nerve, and release stress held in my body.

Interesting articles about the vagus nerve and how it impacts our response to stress:

Home Energetics - Lighting for Relaxation

Developing a good bedtime routine takes practice and a bit of trial and error. I’m still working on what works best for me. I have found that proper lighting in my bedroom at night really helps signal my brain to wind down.

Lighting is so important to promote rest and relaxation, and the bad news is, our current technologies do not support this. Blue lights (aka phones/screens) project unnatural blue, bright, coloring which stimulate your brain into thinking its morning and time to be awake and active. When you’re trying to relax, it’s best to avoid bright blue light exposure.

When I’m winding down for bed I have a red light that I turn on in my bedroom. This creates a warm glow throughout my bedroom and helps to signal my brain that it’s time to wind down. Here are some options I found on amazon - warm light, red night light with dusk to dawn sensor.

I also shift my phone to red coloring as well. Follow these steps to change your phone too.

Let’s chat about your bedtime routine, what have you found works (or doesn’t work) for you?

Affirmations For Relaxation

I am a naturally calm and stress-free person. (I might need to repeat that a few more times before I really believe it, lol)

I release all tension from my mind and relax each muscle in my body.

I breathe in peace, I radiate relaxation.
